Strategy Preferred Stock Drop Puts Bitcoin Buying Plan Under Pressure

  • Strategy’s STRC preferred stock has fallen below its intended $100 level, limiting a funding route the company uses to buy Bitcoin.
  • The company has paused new STRC share sales while the stock trades at a discount.
  • The move matters because Strategy is the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, so changes in its funding model are closely watched by the crypto market.

Strategy’s Bitcoin accumulation strategy is facing a fresh test after one of its preferred stocks dropped to a record low.

According to a June 18 report from CoinDesk, Strategy’s Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, known as STRC, closed at $89 on Wednesday. That is below the roughly $100 level the product is designed to track.

A preferred stock is a type of company share that usually pays a dividend and sits ahead of common stock if payments are made. Strategy has used STRC as one way to raise cash for Bitcoin purchases when the stock trades above its target value.

With STRC now trading below that level, CoinDesk reported that Strategy has paused issuing new shares through this program. In simple terms, one of the company’s easier funding tools is not currently working as intended.

The decline also comes after Strategy disclosed its first Bitcoin sale earlier this month. The company said it sold a small amount of Bitcoin in late May to help cover STRC dividend payments. That drew attention because Strategy is widely known for building, not reducing, its Bitcoin position.

Strategy still holds a very large Bitcoin reserve, and the latest development does not mean the company has stopped buying altogether. It does show, however, that Bitcoin treasury companies can face pressure when their financing tools become more expensive or less attractive to investors.

For crypto investors and token teams, the key lesson is straightforward: treasury strategy depends on more than the price of Bitcoin. It also depends on access to capital, investor demand, and the cost of maintaining financial products linked to that strategy.
